The Greene County Rams varsity basketball teams opened their 2021-22 campaign Nov. 29 in Ogden. The Ram girls topped the Bulldogs 33-29, but the Rams fell to Ogden in the boys game, on the short side of a 56-55 score.
The girls played the Bulldogs even-up in the first quarter, with a 5-5 score when the quarter ended. The Rams were down 16-13 at the half, but a strong third quarter gave them a two point lead, 27-25. They added to the lead in the fourth quarter for the final score of 33-29. The win came despite the Rams turning the ball over 19 times to the Bulldogs’ nine, and the Rams committing 20 fouls to the Bulldogs’ seven.
Senior Brianna Habben led the team in scoring with 13 points, including one 3-pointer; she also led in rebounds with 12. Junior Emma Hoyle scored 10 points and freshman Emma Shipley scored nine points on three 3-point buckets.
As a team, the Rams shot field goals at 28.9 percent and free throws at 25 percent.
It was the coaching debut for head coach Tori Ogden.
Veteran coach Chris Nelson’s boys team trailed 14-6 after the first quarter but trimmed the deficit to three points for a halftime score of 25-22. The score after three quarters was 44-38. The Rams outscored the Bulldogs in the final frame but couldn’t grab the win.
Junior Richard Daugherty and senior Bryce Stalder scored 13 points each and junior Jesse Miller scored 11. Miller and Stalder had six rebounds each, and Daugherty had five rebounds.
As a team the Rams shot at 38.9 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from the free throw line. The Bulldogs had the advantage in 3-point shots, making six of 22 shots for 27.3 percent. The Rams made just two of 21 long baskets for 9.5 percent.
The Rams travel to Story City Friday to play the Roland-Story Norsemen.
